Anniversary

To stand together and look back across all the ground you have covered is its own kind of quiet celebration. The years are the gift, not the looking back.
Anniversary is a painting about marking time together, a couple standing at the edge of a world that feels fully, brilliantly alive: banksias crowded with sulphur crested cockatoos, swallows cutting through blue green air, a moon still lingering into the day, the ocean rolling below in thick, glittering waves. It's a world built the way years together are, one bright day layered over the last, until the whole thing glows.

I grew up in a house that smelled of oil paint, watching my father work without ever being taught. Thirty years on, my paintings stand on loose, accidental grounds, half accident, half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. That middle is where the series takes its name: The Middle Country. My cockatoos and figures are all one thing, my family, painted over and over in a glowing landscape, with the conviction that real happiness comes from within.
