Come Together

Come Together is a painting about the pull of connection — that quiet gravity that draws people toward one another across any distance. A painting for anyone who has ever felt the draw of someone worth moving toward.

Come Together is an original acrylic painting on board, part of my ongoing Australian landscape work. It began the way these paintings always do, with a pour I don't control, then trees and cockatoos worked in loosely and fearlessly to the last mark. The blues and pinks run right through it, and two small figures stand at the top of the hill where the quiet is.

I grew up in a house that smelled of oil paint, watching my father work without ever being taught. Thirty years on, my paintings stand on loose, accidental grounds, half accident, half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. That middle is where the series takes its name: The Middle Country. My cockatoos and figures are all one thing, my family, painted over and over in a glowing landscape, with the conviction that real happiness comes from within.
