From The Middle

Her spirit is out chasing a moon it will never catch. That was never the point of setting it free.
From The Middle is an original acrylic painting on board, part of my ongoing Australian landscape work. It began the way these paintings always do, with a loose, accidental ground, half accident and half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. The reds and oranges swirl up from the centre, cockatoos emerge out of the colour, and a figure sits quietly beside an open cage while a small red bird streaks away toward the moon.

I grew up in a house that smelled of oil paint, watching my father work without ever being taught. Thirty years on, my paintings stand on loose, accidental grounds, half accident, half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. My cockatoos and figures are all one thing: my family, painted over and over in a glowing landscape, with the conviction that real happiness comes from within.
