The Day She Left The Ground

Not everyone who leaves the ground is flying. Some are just holding on to something heavier than themselves.
The Day She Left the Ground is an original acrylic painting on board, part of my ongoing Australian landscape work. It began the way these paintings always do, with a pour I don't control, then the trees, the cockatoos and the figures worked in loosely around wherever it wanted to go. The golds and yellows carry the warmth of the day, and she hangs there just above her own shadow, somewhere between leaving and staying.

I grew up in a house that smelled of oil paint, watching my father work without ever being taught. Thirty years on, my paintings stand on loose, accidental grounds, half accident, half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. That middle is where the series takes its name: The Middle Country. My cockatoos and figures are all one thing, my family, painted over and over in a glowing landscape, with the conviction that real happiness comes from within.
