HUNDRED AND ONE ... Ed. 4 of 50

The former Commercial Hotel in 7 Ellenborough St, Ipswich AUS was built in 1917 and is heritage listed. The two storey timber building is supported by very high adzed timber stumps, which appear to be in original condition and are braced up like a road bridge. Despite being closed as a hotel there are always signs of occupation behind the walls of peeling paint. I’ve heard that it may be a backpackers hostel though I can’t see any signs. The sign on the roof is a rebuilt version of the main sign on the front of the building. Hotels and shearing sheds throughout Australia commonly had painted signs on their corrugated iron roofs, so I thought this was an appropriate gesture on my part. The work shows the old hotel set in contrast to a new highrise apartment building on the adjoining site as well as a very old jacaranda tree of massive proportions. The biscuit coloured grass on the foreground playing fields reminded me of my childhood winters in Warwick where grass was rarely green.

I’m an artist and a member of Urban Sketchers Brisbane with a 50 year design background in architecture, urban design, landscape architecture and graphics. My output consists primarily of sketches and hybrid drawings [digitally edited and assembled] which depict local street views. Between 2018 and 2025, I’ve been a finalist and prize winner in a number of Brisbane, Ipswich and Grafton regional art awards as well as ArchiGraphicArts [Moscow]; winning a first prize in drawing at this year’s Brisbane EKKA. I have been invited to exhibit my work at the Venice Architecture Biennale but can’t afford the starting price. My sketches are included in the World Of Urban Sketching by Stephanie Bower published in the United States in late 2022. In 2024 I attended AsiaLink Sketchwalk Penang as an invited urban sketching demonstrator. Aside from hand drawing which is a great pleasure, much of my work is an exploration of the meeting of hand and computer ... the meeting of craft and industrial process.
