Artwork Description

Afternoons Well Spent, by Alanah Jarvis
An Afternoon Well Spent captures the beauty found in slower moments. Layers of warm neutrals, soft blush tones and weathered textures evoke memories of sunlit afternoons, treasured objects and spaces that have been lovingly lived in. Rich in texture and subtle detail, this abstract work invites the viewer to pause, reflect and appreciate the quiet joy found in everyday life & in rustic nature.

Part of Alanah Jarvis’ Weathered Nature series, this original painting explores the relationship between time, texture and the imperfect beauty of the natural world.

Artist Bio

Alanah Jarvis is an Australian painter working from her studio in Bayside, Melbourne, with more than 466 original works now hanging in homes across Australia and internationally. Her practice moves between two bodies of work: the Abstract Weathered Series and the Realistic Ocean Series.

The Abstract Weathered Series is grounded in wabi sabi, the idea that beauty lives in what is worn, imperfect and shaped by time. These are heavy textured artworks built through layering, palette knife and impasto work, then eroded back, so the surface carries the same marks that wind and water leave on stone, timber and earth. The palettes are drawn from Australian nature: ochre, blush, weathered white, dark green & gold. Each contemporary abstract painting is made to reward a second look, colour that shifts with the light, and texture you want to reach out and touch.

The Realistic Ocean Series turns to the coastline. Painted in oil, these seascape paintings and underwater works follow the ocean's changing light and movement, the surface from above, the stillness beneath. They bring space, breath and calm into a room.

Alanah paints on recycled polyester canvas, built to outlast natural fibre canvases. Reclaiming material that would otherwise be discarded has shaped how she works: the surface arrives with a history already in it, which suits a body of work about the marks time leaves behind. She founded Sustainable Canvas to make that material available to other artists and the range was awarded Gold for Product Innovation at the ROAR Awards, recognition for the same canvas these paintings are made on.

Alanah was named a Top 50 Small Business Leader by Inside Small Business (2025) and a Top 100 Finalist in the She-Com Business Awards (2026).
