Light, energy, emotion - I am interested in the visual experience of looking at art. I experiment with brushstrokes, colour and texture to describe perception, light and materiality.
Gestural marks are made with paint applied directly by hand and brush. These sinuous lines reveal organic shapes drawn from nature and the human body. I like to show the progression of a work and leave the brushstrokes raw and immediate. Monotype printed elements are often included to add space, depth and contrast. The texture of the media I use, the energy of the marks and the juxtaposition of colours are all important parts of the whole.
Travel has been a big part of my life and sketching in inks and pastels whilst travelling has become a vehicle for new colour experimentation and mark exploration in simple format. Using limited media also opens up new avenues for conveying ideas when back in the studio and provides new areas for growth as an artist.
