Alicia Cornwell is an oil painter specialising in Still Life with a particular interest in combining native and exotic florals with objects of old.
Alicia completed a Degree in Fine Art (Monash University) along with a Diploma of Education at Victoria College followed by many years of creatively working her own Vintage and Antique business. Collecting with a passion the unusual and quirky that caught her eye, her home holds many props for her artworks.
Painting from her studio full time on a mountain in Olinda just outside Melbourne, she is inspired by this collection of Vintage and Antique items - tubs of old fabrics, ornate china , intricate vases and glassware with everything in between.
Surrounded by her families 100 year old garden, Botanic gardens and National Parks along with Melbournes major flower growing region a few steps from her studio, she has a vast array of flora available for her artworks that change dramatically throughout the seasons.
Alicia has been in numerous group exhibitions within Australia with her first major solo show at Weswal Gallery in 2023. She has been a finalist in several art prizes including the Omnia Art Prize, Lethbridge 20000 and featured in Scott Cams house on “The Block Tree Change - 2022”
She is the winner in the Still Life Category for Art Lovers Australia Art Prize 2022 AND Bluethumb Art Prize in 2021
In her series “SOUVENIR” Alicia is exploring the unique area she lives and works in. The ancient, magnificent cool temperate rainforests that surround her home against the carefully curated Botanic and private gardens that are slotted within. A busy tourist area that was known as “Melbournes Playground” throughout the 1900’s, with many guest houses created for city folks to experience the fresh mountain air, a game of tennis and a cup of tea. Festivals of tulips and scones and jam. All around the giant tree ferns, the largest flowering eucalyptus in the world - The Mountain Ash, the lyrebirds and the real Australia, behind the English floral fabric curtain.
Her paintings in this body of work bring forth that clash of English froth against brilliant, unique and glorious native flora using her large collection of vintage European fabrics and crockery and Vintage Australian souvenir cloths as inspiration. A souvenir of a grand day out where the ancient forest evolves and grows beyond a tip toe through the tulips..
Her studio in a major tourist area prized for exotic flora from all corners of the world. Surrounded by majestic native forests she lives in a village within this conundrum.
