Welcome to my collection of wine paintings : "From Palate to Palette" featuring "A Great Drop"
I love when my "still life" can have action!
I spent a lot of time pouring red wine. Not to drink! but to study the pour in close detail, in particular how it splashed in the surrounding glass... After many attempts and a lot of wine spilled, I eventually went with a simple splash that paired perfectly with an Australian classic, the 1951 Penfolds Grange Hermitage.
I love painting oversize subjects, creating large art seems to be in my DNA (if you don't know what i mean, check out the bio page) . I also love playing with reflective surfaces like wine bottles and glass. Using those curved surfaces I'm able to distort the light mirrored on them. The Grange label in “A Perfect Drop” is distorted and flipped upside down on the wine surface...a whole lot of fun!
The star of the painting is a rare bottle of 1951 Penfolds Grange, signed by its creator and the company’s chief winemaker at the time, Max Schubert. One of the bottles of this vintage sold in December 2021 for a record $157,624... the highest price ever paid for a bottle of Australian wine! The Penfolds Grange 1951 is apparently considered as one of the rarest in the country. In July 2021, "Decanter" reported "There are estimated to be only about 35 bottles of Penfolds Grange Hermitage Bin 1 Shiraz 1951 left in existence"
