“Dot” is part of my Lollies collection... I love this series because the memories of lollies (or you might call them candies) bring up some fun stories...
Well, one of mine is that of visiting my grandmother at Christmas! She would have lollies piled on the table!! Yes, piled! To my child eyes, that was magic, tempting and incredibly joyful! And although I don’t remember what kind they were, the memory of that colourful pile still makes me smile.
So here is my smile passed on to you – perhaps this painting will bring you a similar joy?
Welcome to my “Lollie Collection”.
Some might consider these lollies simple and mundane but I wanted to take something as simple as a pile of colourfully wrapped lollies and elevate them to a status of something more... giving them centre stage to command attention in any room they may be seen.
My work is often described as playful and fun however within that lies a serious practice to which I have devoted my working life. In this series I use blurred backgrounds to not only emulate how our eyes see things but to create focus on the two polka-dotted candies in the front. Although the in-focus lollies are hyperrealism, if you look closely, you can see the abstract of the brush strokes in the detail and to add a greater visual impact the whole composition is enlarged 1000 times. My partner likes to call the combination of the blur, the realism and the abstract : "andorealism" [which makes me chuckle]!
In the end, I had a lot of fun painting this piece knowing that it would stimulate memories of joy and growing up with the excitement of a pile of lollies!
