ABOUT THIS SERIES - MYSTICAL MYTHS
Anonui is the first in this series, representing folk from fairytales or mythological traditions.
Being a fantasy writer, there are quite a few of these folk swirling around in my consciousness. Let me tell you about “Anonui”.
A long time ago, in a land faraway, there lived a handsome fisherman named Telwyn, whose life was saved one day in the most peculiar fashion.
Trapped in a storm, his boat was guided to safety by a sea sprite named Anonui. Now, Anonui was very beautiful, but she owned no clothes, or anything else for that matter. She wanted for nothing but the sea and all that was in it.
Telwyn was strong and brave, but had nothing but his little boat and net, so could only offer Anonui a simple blanket to thank her for saving his boat and his life.
Every evening, Telwyn would go fishing in his little boat. Everyday, Anonui would sit on the rocks, wrapped in her blanket, waiting for Telwyn to pass and wave to her.
Over the years, despite their never having spoken, they grew increasingly attached to their daily ritual of waving to one another. Anonui didn’t seem to notice Telwyn growing old and frail, whilst she remained youthful. It never occurs to an immortal that other folks die.
One night, Telwyn didn’t pass her on the way out, or the way in. Nothing greeted Anonui all night but the wind and the waves.
The following night was the same. And the night after that. Many nights passed without a sign of Telwyn and his boat.
But Anonui came and waited. Year after year. And, some folks say, she waits there still.
So there you have it. I do hope Anonui resonates with you. I painted her with much love.
TECHNICAL ASPECTS
Richly-pigmented watercolour pencils are used for detail, with acrylic washes painted over to add vibrancy and depth. Many layers of protective varnish are added to the entire work.
This piece is archival quality.
The stretched canvas is ready to hang with sturdy D-rings and wire. No need to add a decorative frame. However, I have included an insitu picture showing what framing might add to the work.
The sides are painted in the same gorgeous ultramarine/lamp black mixture as the background behind Anonui.
I have signed this work, with year and title, on the back, not wishing to disturb the image with a signature. A certificate of authenticity accompanies each piece.
