ABOUT CHINOISERIE

CHINOISERIE is a musing on the concept of "favour". A large collection of ginger jars sits on a rich table cloth. Three empresses decorate the largest jars, with a group of birds adorning the yellow jar in front of them. Smaller jars add to the "favoured" collection in this whimsical piece.

I pondered what is would have been like to be "favoured" by others in this way, to have one's image painted on a piece of pottery, only to be cast aside when a more fashionable favourite arrived. How fortunate are the "favoured" in actuality? History suggests not very fortunate at all.

I painted this large piece during the summer, in the heat of my little studio. I got a little headachy inhaling the smoke of a nearby bushfire. But I was obsessed with finishing this somewhat experimental work. A series of artwork, all featuring jars, vases and other receptacles in the Chinoiserie style follows on from this painting.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

Rich, taffy-like layers of acrylic are painted in flattened perspective upon stretched canvas. Pencil is used for the delicate facial features, before layers of protective varnish are added.

This work is ready to hang with sturdy D-rings and wire.

The sides are painted black to lift the surface image and make it “pop”.

I have signed this work on the front, with year and title on the back. A certificate of authenticity accompanies each piece.
