Original painting. This is a part of an ongoing series of paintings, taking as their starting point the 'Black Classics' Penguin paperback books.
The upper section of the painting is an impressionistic portrait of a woman swimming, based on the main character of Kate Chopin's classic novel. The portrait is painted with thick brushstrokes, and I had in mind the swimming portraits of Nicholas Harding. The woman's expression may be one of calm, or concern, acceptance or loss - readers familiar with the book will know that her love of the sea is both liberating and tragic.
The lower section is predominantly black and white, with the title and author rendered in chaotic text.
Please note that the sides of the painting are painted, and it will not need framing.
