I’ve been painting this series for about four years now, inspired by fond memories (and continuing experiences) at Australian Chinese restaurants. One of the paintings in this series won the $10,000 Hawkesbury Art Prize in 2019, and they have since been included in some prestigious gallery shows. I’ve recently started naming the paintings after the Blue Dragon restaurant in Northmead, Sydney, which was a favourite until it closed in 2020. I’ve chosen the title so that I can keep track of the series easily, but the actual dishes and settings are inspired by several restaurants.
The paintings are a celebration of the good things in life, the simple pleasures of good food and drink with family and friends. I love the fluorescent sauces, the blue willow plates, the splatter on the tablecloths.
The canvas is ready to hang as it is and won't need framing - the sides are painted the same colour as the tablecloth.
For lovers of food, drink, and good times.
