An expressive, painterly reinterpretation of a classic Pelican book cover. The subject matter is somewhat provocative or troubling, though it’s a topic that most of us are familiar with, especially during the last few years. The process of creating the artwork was somewhat intuitive. The basic layout comes from the actual book cover, but the image started out quite aggressive and ‘agitated’, but subsequent layers of paint calmed it down and I now think it’s quite a beautiful and positive image - making art from something negative.
The painting’s surface is textured, the result of multiple layers of thick and dripping paint. The sides of the canvas are painted, and it is ready to hang without needing to be framed.
A celebration of the original 70s design, and of bold, energetic abstract painting.
