Take a Walk on the Wild Side

A new painting in my Monopoly series.

I take popular imagery from classic sources and re-interpret it visually with expressive brushwork, thick layers of paint, splatters and drips. The text is often altered too, to give the paintings a new and often ironic or subversive message. In this particular painting, the text comes Lou Reed's classic song 'Walk on the Wild Side'. The juxtaposition of classic imagery and unexpected text can be a source of humour and creates a nice dynamic.

This painting is on stretched canvas, with painted sides, and is ready to hang without needing to be framed. It has a gloss varnish and is signed on the back. The paint is richly textured and the brushwork of the background free and energetic (creating a counterpoint to the more rigid black lines of the figures).

Painter from the Blue Mountains. In the last nine years I've had a lot of success with abstract paintings, drawing inspiration from the covers of 'Popular Penguin' paperback books, from the classic Monopoly board, Uno cards, and other pop culture icons. The paintings are distorted representations of the subject matter, transformed with thick brushstrokes and often random lettering, retaining the essence of the original but also becoming something new. I have had sell out shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Singapore. My art has been featured in Art Edit magazine, The Grand Designs Australia Sourcebook and the Financial Review.
