Artwork Description

‘Through the Roses’ is the fifth piece in the Textured Gardens collaborative series between Brittany Dixon Art and The Fern Journals.

Combining Brittany’s oil painting and Georgia’s embroidery skills, we’ve created a unique series that brings new dimension to an artwork. There are over 70 hand embroidered roses on this canvas! With Textured Gardens, we strive to create art which evokes a sense of escapism, paintings you can get lost in, art you can touch.

This particular piece was born from imagination and heavily influenced by our love of the French Impressionists such as Monet and Renoir. During our visit to Monet’s garden in Giverny, France, we were enamoured by the not only the beauty of the great Impressionist’s garden, but also the sense of enchantment we felt walking over the green bridge, along the water lily pond, through the rose arches … Stepping from one world into one rosy and swirling other.

An oil painting of orange and pink poppy flowers in a warm glass vase on canvasOil painting of a little hut on Achill Island in Ireland, green grass and blue ocean with cliffs below. This is a painting of the first-to-bloom nasturtium flowers I grew from seed. I love their unruliness and the green and orange colour combination. I also wanted to capture the flowers’ shadows and compliment their wild, free growth with plenty of texture.Poppies have a wild, unruly nature to them which has always captivated me; their petals are like tissue paper, soft and ephemeral and unique in each flower.

This painting is an exploration of colour and texture, and hopefully a pretty reminder to always bloom wildy, like poppies do in spring.
