Shifting Spirit by Bruce Peebles, encapsulates a profound experience while camping on the fleeting shores of a salt lake in Western Australia. Enthralled by the celestial spectacle of the 'Sisters' star cluster, integral to local Aboriginal spirituality, Bruce was inspired by the Seven Sisters Dreaming.
The Seven Sisters' story, featuring their playful escapade upon a lake's surface, entwined with the tale of a pursuing man, evokes a sense of fear and flight. This image weaves together three distinct elements to narrate this tale.
Crafting a clay figurine and photographing it with deliberate movement, Bruce merged its image with a duplicated shadow to depict the pursuing spirit. Complementing this, a chosen image of the salt lake, mirroring the figurine's motion, was meticulously integrated. Finally, the horizon's small hillocks and islands, symbolic of the Sisters' safe haven, were captured from the surroundings, forming the third element.
"Shifting Spirit" intricately unites these elements, visually narrating the ongoing quest of the man chasing the Sisters and their concealed refuge. It's a testament to the convergence of storytelling, artistic creation, and the ethereal landscape, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in this multifaceted narrative and cultural depth.
