Artwork Description

Blundstone and Burberry. A contradiction indeed!

We are more than the sum of one thing, one pursuit or one interest. We are all full of contradictions that make us uniquely us.

While these two accessories are rarely seen together in real life, this still-life portrays two small parts of my life - part time on construction sites, and part time fancy pants who doesn’t mind getting dressed up to visit an art gallery.

A worn pair of Blundstone composite boots and a pristine Burberry Alchester Bowler bag depict the surprising contradictions we can find within ourselves and our daily expressions.

I fell in love with this bag from the first moment I saw it. As a super practical person who usually only concerns herself with the essentials in life, I was surprised I had such a strong urge to buy such luxurious frippery! The boots on the other hand were a necessity which struck very little feeling other than observing how weird it was I still visit construction sites regularly while being a professional artist.

I embrace the contradiction and absurdity of it all, and hope to one day be brave enough to wear them together in public!

Made using rich, high carbon and graphite pencils.

Artist Bio

“I choose my subjects like I choose my food: I’ll have a little of everything”

Candace is a drawing artist living on Australia’s Gold Coast. She is best known for her diverse subjects and detailed works that catch the eye. Primarily working with colour pencil and graphite, Candace specialises in expressing realism through her technique.

Her art’s ability to capture realistic detail and captivate and move emotions resulted in her piece ‘This is not a drill’ being announced the winner of the 2020 Art Lovers Australia Prize.

Candace’s work is often inspired by something offbeat, situations of everyday life or from her travels. Some pieces tell a clear story, others allow the viewer to derive their own meaning and connection. Being unencumbered by set themes and subjects allows her to create something truly unique to the occasion.

She has been told she is “down-to-earth” in her creative approach and talents. She welcomes the description as she firmly believes art skills are attainable by anyone. “It takes dedication, hard work and practice, rather than wishful thinking and an artsy-fartsy smock!”
