Finding myself in a very different landscape than the Central Coast NSW when we relocated to the Northern Rivers I was a bit overwhelmed by the fantastic work being produced by local artists and wondered what I could do that might be different. As Paul and I set out on many bushwalks, from Byron Bay to Minyon Falls I felt strongly that the sub-tropical rainforest had to be expressed in a way that it impacted me - and that was the beautiful tangled vines and luxuriant ferns and palms. This was a 'lazy, languishing' landscape, so unlike the strong, dry bush of the Hawkesbury Sandstone region. It is a landscape that is at once seemingly exotic and yet very much Australian. It twists and curls about itself creating beautiful shapes and lines. It was almost like a 'net', impenetrable, and so the early settlers had described it 'the big scrub' as they went about hacking it down to create pastures for cattle. But not all of it has been removed, and we found a few delightful pockets where it flourished in all its luxuriant glory. My 'big scrub' series is my attempt to draw attention to its timeless beauty.
