Mullumbimby is a NSW north coast town that is renowned for its friendliness. For this work I was influenced by the paintings of American 20th Century artist Edward Hopper as he painted ordinary scenes of people in urban landscapes. His art is however very powerful in its simplicity. We lived in Mullumbimby for 5 years during which time I painted some of the locals going about their daily activities. This particular work won 3rd Prize in the Ocean Shores Art Prize a few years ago. PLEASE NOTE: This painting was damaged when hanging in a restaurant and has 2 small cuts in the canvas which have been mended. Pictures of the damage can be supplied, or prospective buyers might be able to find these 2 spots by magnification of the image.

Artwork Description
Artist Bio
Art was all around me from the time I was born, being the youngest of 5, with 3 of my siblings expressing themselves through visual arts. As a young mother in the 1970's I had the opportunity to attend an Art College in Holland where my appetite for creative expression was heightened by the teachers there. Ceramic sculpture, life drawing and painting were my chosen subjects.
Relocating back to Australia, I saw my country through different eyes - the vast sky, the rugged coastline, the uniqueness of the Australian bush.
For the past 25 years I have focused on the way I see, and feel, about my country, (with occasional forays into portraiture and ceramic sculpture) from the uniqueness of the vegetation of the Hawkesbury Sandstone soils around the NSW Central Coast to the luxuriant rainforests on the far north coast. I find myself deeply moved and inspired by the strength and beauty of nature.
While most of my 2 dimensional work is done in oils, I have recently begun a series in charcoal and am preparing for an exhibition at the Grafton Regional Gallery "French Door Gallery" in January 2022.
