This painting is part of my" Mother Nature "Series. My mother has always been a keen gardener and has an incredible 'overgrown' garden. However, the garden was dying because of the drought and water restrictions, all except for an area adjacent to her laundry that she watered with grey water. The plants germinated, grew and thrived in this area. When I visited, we would spend time in the garden wandering and appreciating the determination of "Mother Nature" to thrive. I began drawing and painting the plants in her garden.
I love to paint early in the morning, when the sun is bright and the shadows are long. I felt that this holly hock was determined and stood "centre stage" amongst bushes of daisy. I use oil paints that are applied in washes initially , building up to thicker paint application while using bold dynamic brush strokes. This painting has been varnished hence some of the shine in the photos.
