Artwork Description

'Hold' features a larger possum with a baby possum holding it's back and another small possum attached to flora beneath. Emanating from the realistically rendered is a stylised version of the trio made of colourful shapes. The stylised / abstract version represents the dynamic possibilities of living creatures indicating a perspective that like humans, animals have a rich inner world. The composition is organised in such a way that the abstract version of one baby possum embraces the realistically rendered version of it's sibling: the physical world holding space for the intangible psychological or emotional world of another.

The realistic painting of the possums are based on a reference image taken by Balinese photographer I Wayan Sumatika (image has been licensed).

Artist Bio

Cynthia Howard is a contemporary artist working mostly in oil paints. Her concepts come from stream-of-consciousness and either manifest as the free-flowing lines in her colourful abstract figures, or as the surrealist undertones in her realistically painted compositions. Sometimes she combines realism with her abstract figures in one concept. Cynthia Howard’s work surrounds an interest in life philosophy, meaningful relationships and self actualisation. The portraits and subjects she portrays are treated with reverence, focussing on their self-ownership, strength and wholeness. Her paintings deal predominately with the richness of our internal psychological and emotional world and musings about how we radiate energy and intention in our outer world.
