Artwork Description

“The Sunburnt Fisherman is a stream of consciousness painting executed straight onto oil paper with no preplanning or sketching.

In this painting a sunburnt fisherman gazes out with tired eyes. His skin matches the red sky alluding to the idea that he is one with this harsh environment. His headwear is somewhere between a cap and a Crown adorned with a gold cross. On the horizon of green sea there is a boat with two fishermen. One reaches down into the water, their arm becoming one with the boat and the ocean.

The fisherman is burnt and tired, and yet with his upright posture, forward gaze and crown he also looks noble and authoritative. This piece is about a respect for and connection to ones work and a curiosity for the lives others might inhabit.” - Cynthia Howard

Artist Bio

Cynthia Howard is a contemporary artist working mostly in oil paints. Her concepts come from stream-of-consciousness and either manifest as the free-flowing lines in her colourful abstract figures, or as the surrealist undertones in her realistically painted compositions. Sometimes she combines realism with her abstract figures in one concept. Cynthia Howard’s work surrounds an interest in life philosophy, meaningful relationships and self actualisation. The portraits and subjects she portrays are treated with reverence, focussing on their self-ownership, strength and wholeness. Her paintings deal predominately with the richness of our internal psychological and emotional world and musings about how we radiate energy and intention in our outer world.
