Artwork Description

I love cockatoos they are my favourite Australian bird…

I’m from New Zealand and as a kid one of my fond memories was of a cockatoo called ‘Pickles’ that lived in the local hotel, he’s actually still there and has been since 1984! He was the first cockatoo that I had ever seen in real life and I loved going there to say hello to him, I also wanted to let him out of his cage as I’d prefer him to be free! When I moved to Australia 20 years ago I loved seeing wild cockatoos flying freely and still do to this day! They are just beautiful.

I wanted to capture their cheeky nature, they are perched in an old gumtree at sunset…I wanted to do a modern take with my Urban Pop Art Style, the highly textured birds pop out at you from the painting, and the tree with the electric pop of orange paint pulls you in and adds movement to the piece.
I’m really happy with it! It makes me smile every time I look at it :)

It has been finished with satin varnish, signed on the front ‘Debstar’ my street name :) and is ready to hang.
