Whilst my work is normally fairly realistic, detailed and busy, I enjoy coming back to the discipline of breaking down a composition into a series of planes and working out the tonal subtleties of how these interact in the light.
It received a Very Highly Commended from the Judge Pauline Zufferey at the Drummoyne Art Society Members Show in October 2023.
This very linear minimalist composition has been on my mind for some time. It brings to mind the mantra my high school art teacher Ms Veness who had a big role in encouraging my art practice ( and gifting me my first set or acrylics) repeated a lot: "Line, direction, shape, size, tone, texture, colour". Each element needs to be carefully considered and balanced in harmony to get a satisfying overall image.
It's interesting how we come back to things that we were challenged by earlier in life. I was hopeless at technical drawing at school in Ukraine, and yet I quite enjoy my set square these days!
