Many years ago when working on my HSC art works, I was inspired by De Chiricos enigmatic landscapes. Stark and forlorn, with their long late afternoon shadows and melancholy atmosphere I incorporated some of the visual devices into my work, nostalgic pieces of longing for home as a new migrant to Australia.
More recently my work has been located in the new Parramatta Square precinct and I get a bird eye view of the square with its geometric patterns and figures in a landscape of new and old. I was intrigued by the afternoon light and shade of St Johns Cathedral.
In this piece I tried to work in a more minimalist way, simplifying the composition to shapes and tonal differences rather than focusing on the micro detail as I am prone to do. I deliberately used more muted colours and didn't build up layers of paint across all areas, instead leaving some less worked.
I quite like the result. And I hope you enjoy it too.
