Artwork Description

“On Safari – Cheetah” is an abstract oil painting that captures the grace and power of the cheetah in its natural habitat. On safari, early morning, we encountered two Cheetahs - a bonded pair of brothers who hunt and live together. Apparently this is common. Our group – about 6 of us and two guides, one in the front and one in the rear, walked in single file – towards them. As long as we stayed close together, no gaps, they think we are a large animal, not small enough for their prey. We had an unforgettable, up close and personal experience. Their eyes were an intense colour of orange gold. Their incredible speed, makes them formidable hunters and this painting attempts to capture a glimpse of their beauty and rendered in a warm palette of ochres, creams, and pale oranges. The colours evoke the heat of the African plains and the golden light that bathes the landscape at dawn and dusk. Linear pencil marks, and spots, accentuate the cheetahs’ lithe forms , spotted coats and the terrain.

This painting is a very modern, contemporary abstract work that would look fantastic hanging in your home.

Artist Bio

Dianne commenced her career as an artist at age 52, studying a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) at Curtin University. Dianne works from her studio in Mullaloo, Western Australia.

Reflecting on her journey so far, she says:

What I have learned is that there are no short cuts – you have to put in the time and do the work. Creativity is a force to be reckoned with when you are an expressive person, the nagging urge inside me compels me to make art and face that blank canvas, to extend myself and find the courage to make those first playful marks. It is like opening ‘Pandora’s Box’ of transient reflections and immediately I am engaged.

Artist Statement

My practice has developed into an emotional performance of expressive, bold application of lines, colour, texture and shape. I work from a place of imaginative play, mark making by scraping, adding and removing, using spray paint, drawing with pens, pencils and crayons. I have an intuitive dialogue with the work. I swing from impulse to a considered mark, line, shape or colour. My abstract paintings are inspired by the various environments that I have found myself in whether environmental, domestic, psychological or industrial landscapes - colours and forms drawn from the world around me and laying dormant within. I always knew there was an abstract expressionist residing within...
