This painting was inspired by the historic paddle steamer Marion and by encountering a young student who, despite being on the autism spectrum, has drawn boats over and over in many years —every kind, from memory or references.
I cannot fully enter his world, but I’ve always wanted to understand what he feels when he draws a boat. Through this painting, I realised that what I love is not just the boat but the water beneath it. The water doesn’t simply carry the boat—it gives it purpose, direction, and a false sense of control. In truth, we never conquer nature. We merely drift within its embrace.
