Artwork Description

Aurora Australis is a visual poem disguised as a painting.
A small scene, a tablescape where a meal has been enjoyed and games have been played, ensconced into the wider cosmos.
In cartomancy, the 9 of hearts is the "wish card". It symbolises satisfaction and love.
This piece celebrates the importance of the small things even in the context of the "big things" and the world at large.
Gathering around the table, with the ones you love. This is the essence of life.

Gloss varnished
Rich textured surface.

Artist Bio

Emilie Maguin is a visual artist based in Perth, Western Australia.

Her work is expressive , striving to capture a poetic depiction of the natural world with the use of strong and emotionally resonant colour .

Layers of heavy acrylics, oil and pastels build up rich texture on the canvas, adding to the visual interest and tactility of Emilie's works.
Intuitive mark making and gestural brush strokes overlap and weave symbolism and story telling into each composition. The tension between abstraction and figuration, dense solid colour and line, is repeatedly explored in the practice.

Emilie's artistic training was acquired in Aix-en-Provence, France, where she grew up. Her influences are varied, but the works of Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, Vanessa Bell and David Hockney remain firm favourites.
