Staying at the beach near Rosebud in Victoria, I noticed the banksia trees which line the foreshore are in full bloom: magnificent, rustic and simply lovely. I was very glad I packed my kit, so I could sketch and paint on the spot as the lapping of waves on the seaside and local birds kept me company.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I started by deciding to change the background which should have been pale grey (it was an overcast day) to bright pink, soft mauve, and a little grey. I positioned the banksia flowers within the canvas and sketched in the main branches. The leaves started to emerge, and as I progressed, more layers of thick paint were applied using the palette knife and brush. I later scratched with the edge of a business card and added more lines to the leaves.
Essentially, I thought it was important to retain the muted colours of those beautiful leaves and flowers, so left the tree in natural colours, but I also wanted some serious 'kapow' with the background. I believe a bright splash of colour is just what we need right now.
Please note, the sides are painted in a similar pink to the background - I can change this on request, and let me know if you need photos.
I am sure it would look amazing in your home or office.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
I was born into a highly creative family of musicians, authors and painters, and learned from a young age how to observe and appreciate nature and my environment. So, as an adult, there is no surprise I have embraced art as my full time career and passion. Working almost exclusively in oil paint, my art is heavily influenced by the indigenous landscape, particularly of the Northern Territory where I lived intermittently in 2011 and 2012, and my home in central Victoria where I live entirely off-grid on rambling bushland acreage.
Like something similar in a different size or using different colours? I am happy to discuss commission requests.
Please note, I do not produce prints of my artwork.
Best,
