In the outback, these giants loom over dust, stone and grass, providing shelter and shade to birds, animals and insects. I have painted "Australian Spring" with many layers of professional artists' paint, using a combination of broad and fine brushstrokes, toothbrush splattering, and palette knife layering. The result is intensely layered, deep, and evocative, with plenty to look at and admire as your eye is drawn first over the balding tree trunks, then across leaves and other foliage, and finally to small accents of orange and red. Traditional colours have been used here, but in non-traditional ways, so this work is both realist and semi-abstract.
