Artwork Description

I spent several summers painting plein air on islands off the coast of Maine. I preferred to paint boulders when the tide was low so as to see the rocks in their sculptural states.

Artist Bio

My paintings echo the complexities of landscape, from underwater reflections to intersections of nature and architecture. Fragments appear in fluid, veiled spaces while clearly defined lines and stencils exist in tension with naturalistic gestures that fade in and out of focus, layered with glimpses of my environment that suggest fragments of memory. Influenced by a 2015 artist residency at Yale-NUS in Singapore, I’ve incorporated stencils and collages from Asian sources into my paintings.

Contemporary dance provides a rhythmic metaphor. I am currently working on large multi-panel paintings that convey movement through timed sequences. The breaks between panels provide rhythmic stops as the viewer’s gaze travels across the span. Choreography also suggests a metaphor of polyphony, of interwoven independent voices, or contrasting personas.
