Artwork Description

The Watchful Toby

Watercolour, ink and pastel on paper, framed, signed at the front
3x40 cm

As an artist, I aim to capture the essence of the world around me through my paintings.
The Watchful Toby is a piece that I created with the intention of capturing the beauty and curiosity of cats. Toby, the subject of the painting, is shown with his yellow eyes wide open in a state of surprise or watchfulness, perhaps at the sight of the yellow snacks in front of him. He is wrapped up in a striped orange and pink blanket, adding an element of coziness and warmth to the piece.

The story behind The Watchful Toby is one of adventure and discovery. Toby was a stray cat who roamed the streets, always on the lookout for something interesting to explore. One day, he stumbled upon a bucket of yellow snacks, and his curiosity got the best of him. He cautiously approached the bucket, his eyes wide open with surprise and wonder. As he began to snack on the treats, he felt a sense of warmth and comfort wash over him, like he had finally found a place where he belonged.
Wrapped up in his cozy blankets, Toby content but he remained alert, always on the lookout for the next adventure that lay ahead. The glowing lights behind him represent the endless possibilities that the world has to offer, and the sense of wonder and awe that Toby feels as he explores it.
The Watchful Toby is a painting that shows the essence of curiosity, adventure, and the beauty of cats. Hope this piece brings smile and joy to someone!

Artist Bio

From an early age, I was drawn to creative expression, discovering my passion for art as soon as I could hold a crayon.
I pursued this passion academically, earning a degree in Art Education in Ukraine, which laid the foundation for my artistic and teaching career.
After relocating to Australia in 2002, I continued to develop my practice and actively sought opportunities to exhibit my work.
I have since participated in various art prizes and exhibited in local galleries, while also sharing my knowledge through teaching, both in my home studio and within the school community attended by my children.
For me, art is more than a passion; it is a lifelong journey of exploration, growth, and connection. Through both my creative practice and teaching, I aim to inspire others to experience the joy and transformative power of art. My work has allowed me to engage with audiences locally on the Gold Coast and internationally, reinforcing my belief in creativity as a universal language that enriches lives.
