Artwork Description

Framed in museum-quality sustainable Tasmanian oak frames and Art Glass.
Fallen explores my memory and experience of the Australian Landscape. The work starts as a photograph and is then transformed into a depiction of my memory of the landscape through a transformative process in the darkroom. The negative is enlarged across 4 pieces deconstructing the landscape into sections. These sections are then individually hand-coloured with oil paint before being reconstructed. This process imitates how memories are formed, things are experienced, then dissected through thought, before being put back together in their new form as a memory.

Artist Bio

Dr. James Rhodes is a distinguished multi-disciplinary artist renowned for his exceptional work with photo media, painting, and sculpture. In his art, Rhodes ingeniously incorporates his acute awareness of time and memory, leaving subtle symbols that encourage the viewer to delve deeper.

Rhodes' artistic practice delves into the inherent illusion embedded in the memetic arts, a nuanced exploration that reveals his unique perception of the world around him. His keen ability to highlight the evocative power of imagery elevates his work beyond the mere visual into the realm of the emotive and thought-provoking.

In 2022, Rhodes earned a Ph.D. degree, the subject of which was the meaning of materiality in photographic practice. Currently, he is a lecturer in Photography at The University of Newcastle, where he continues to inspire and mentor budding artists.
