I just love the tropical pandanus trees that you see everywhere on the Sunshine Coast where I live…..they are almost like sculptures in themselves!
I’ve used positive/negative painting techniques where you paint around the subject, not on the subject. In the first layer, I’ve painted muted beachy earth tones that form the pandanus trunk and leaf shapes. It actually ends up being far more interesting, especially in a mini painting.
