This portrait is based on Jeff Martin of The Tea Party and was submitted into the 2019 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. Earlier in that year I was lucky enough to spend a few hours with Jeff at his home working on a portrait for that year’s Archibald Prize.
I was happy that he was ok with me producing another portrait as it gave me the opportunity to work in a different style and establish a different range of details and marks.
My aim with this portrait was to evoke the Middle Eastern instrumentation and styling present in much of The Tea Party's kusic and also within Martin's other musical endeavours, such as Jeff Martin 777 and The Armada. I also aimed for this work to embody the rich, dramatic and emotional atmospherics and hard rock edge present in The Tea Party. This was coupled with channeling my personal synaesthesia when listening to The Tea Party's music, usually originating from particular songs. The colour and tonal schemes within this work reflect that process.
Ready to hang with strong wire/d-rings on the back.
