This piece depicts the six seasons in the Noongar seasonal calendar, those are Birak, Bunuru, Djerba, Makuru,, Djilba and Kambarang
Noongar people recognise six distinct seasons, and instead of relying on set dates we relied on cues in the world around us – plants, animals, temperature, weather – changes to these things told us what season it was, what we needed to do, and where we needed to go.
Each of the six seasons represents and explains the seasonal changes we see annually. The flowering of many different plants, the hibernation of reptiles and the moulting of swans are all helpful indicators that the seasons are changing.
