CALDER is a painted response to a sculptural form by Alexander Calder, an artist whose work has long fascinated me for its balance of energy and restraint. In this piece, I isolate and enlarge sections of one of his abstract sculptures, transforming steel into painted gesture.
While still working within my usual hard-edge style, I’ve introduced subtle irregularities that echo the raw edging found in metal sculpture. These details are a quiet nod to the physicality of Calder’s work. The result is a composition that feels both structured and expressive, anchored by sweeping curves, fine lines and a bold, limited palette. This work is about form, movement, and the way abstraction can suggest weight, tension and presence.
