Artwork Description

Oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed on the back.

After the prolonged siege of Troy, Odysseus returned to Ithaca. It was an epic journey. Upon his arrival, he had been gone so long that nobody recognised him - except for his dog Argos, who fell and died with joy when he saw his master. My painting is influenced by Homer, the wall paintings of ancient Egypt and Henri Roousseau.

The image is of a critical moment in a game of cricket, when a batsman is dismissed. It is a bright, sunny day, but despite the significance of the on-field drama, a young woman still needs to tend to the milking of her cow. We are all the stars of our own movie until, like the person who was in the boat in the background, we cross to the other side. Ziggy sleeps, Frankie is curious about the surfer at the beach. Apollo gave to Cassandra the gift of prophecy, but then cursed her so that nobody believed her prophecies. Troy fell, even though she warned that it would. I see Cassandra as being like the climate scientist who has been warning us of climate change - but we will not listen. The drastic floods in my area are referred to, as is Troy with the horse.
