This floral still life is more a Art Deco style than a 17th century Dutch style.
During the Deco period ‘true realism’ was not very much appreciated. There were a number of academies that were still teaching the ‘fine’ arts, but they were far and few between. When I was doing my academy entrance exams, it was all post impressionism. Bernard Buffet and Utrillo were the leading artist of that day, but not taken as seriously anymore by the art market today due to the amount of prints that spoiled their future (One of the reasons I am not a fan of prints). This is an original work, not a copy of some else. A similar composition of flowers I had done 25 or more years ago, although differently and in a smaller size, I was drawn back to do it again in a more impressive manner. I believe I succeeded with this one. Definitely one of the my favorites.

Artwork Description
Artist Bio
Kivits’ classic oeuvre includes not only original Still-life’s, but also Fruit and Floral compositions, Landscapes, Seascapes and Figurative works in glazes of oil-paint. Predominantly tapping into his antique collection for inspiration, his works take considerably longer to produce; hence a small number of masterpieces are created annually.
True traditional realism, all in the line from the Sixteenth century European Masters onward, he is staying true to these time-proven styles, refusing digital means to aid his work, e.g. projection, pre-printed canvas, grid tracings, or anything but the skill of his own eyes to hand.
Dutch-born Kivits' has firmly established himself in Australia as a legitimate Brand over the years, and his creations have found their ways to art lovers in many developed countries.
