Artwork Description

An impressionistic painting of Banksia integrifolia, commonly known as coast banksia, is a species of tree that grows along the east coast of Australia. One of the most widely distributed Banksia species, it occurs between Victoria and Central Queensland in a broad range of habitats, from coastal dunes to mountains.
I have used a drawing method of scratching back to reveal complementary red, orange and yellow undertones in the background paint layers. Thick acrylic paint is used to achieve the textures showing the history of the paint application and mark making; the way you can see through to the under painting where I have scratched creates an overlapping pattern with a beautiful rhythm of colors and textures.

Artist Bio

Joseph Villanueva is an accomplished impressionist artist whose vibrant acrylic paintings have captivated audiences both nationally and internationally. With works featured in private collections across 24 countries, he has been recognized as one of Bluethumb Art Gallery's Best Emerging Australian artists to watch.

Joseph's background in Architecture and Landscape Architecture informs his work, which is inspired by the natural world and the interplay of colors and textures. He has a particular affinity for landscapes in bloom, awe-inspiring skies, and garden vistas bursting with flowers, as well as interiors inspired by his personal collection of plants. His paintings are characterized by a bold and optimistic palette that pairs perfectly with his free-flowing linework, resulting in compositions that are simultaneously abstract and grounded in figurations and structural elements. He draws freehand over the wet paint with virtuosity and imaginative flair, relying on both memory and observation to create works that capture the essence of the natural world. The elements of land, sky, and nature overlap in his paintings, creating a sense of harmony and balance that draws the viewer into the scene.
