All art by Josephine Josephsen

A medieval technique used for icon work, I workshopped in Italy. Rabbit skin glue gesso is applied in many layers to seasoned timber panel; more layers of Armenian red earth bole; then water-gilded 23kt gold leaf, burnished and tooled; painted with egg tempera; then sealed with epoxy resin to protect delicate surface. This Madonna is referenced from Botticelli's 15th century work. Our Australian desert landscape, vast and vivid, stretching to infinity under an opal sky. Sparse vegetation and gritty textured surfaces. Shifting unfocussed images as in a mirage. Limited colour palette in oil and tactile cold wax medium. You can run your hand over it to feel the landscape.
