"Of things past and lost - Fair Winds and Following Seas"

Beautifully and professionally framed and ready to hang - total size 100cm (h) x 87cm (w) x 4cm depth White wood, minimal lines, box frame with acid free white mount and specialized art Perspex, “Of things past and lost - Fair Winds and Following Seas" is the latest artwork and evolvement of this series. Created and reworked with hand stitched, recycled, vintage, paper on to a recycled discarded supermarket poster.
Reutilising well used and treasured vintage maps and books ('The Old Man and the Sea' and 'The Cutty Sark') and other recycled papers. Speaking of history and what has past - and the transient and impermanent nature in our lives. 'Drawing' a new story from the old. 'Fair Winds and Following Seas' a traditional seafaring greeting and an acknowledgment of the past while looking forward to the next journey.
A painting major during my university days with collage, I embrace a more intimate and personal process with the recycled and vintage papers at times encompassing textiles and needlework.
Collage especially allows this reworking and pastiche to make a new story or 'paint' a new picture. I adore the process and opportunities that collage allows and embrace using and recycling vintage and discarded papers and magazines - the ephemeral and the discarded. That which is fleeting/passing and impermanent. Giving new life and form - a new story.

A recipient of a City of Sydney Work/Live Studio Residency, Karen has exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia, UK, USA and Europe over the past 30 years.

She is represented in a number of public Australian, UK and USA collections and private collections in Australia,  Europe, USA and UK.

Coull is passionate about the often marginalised, domestic/traditionally female art practices with a strong emphasis on analogue collage using vintage and recycled paper. Her current focus is on her journey of ageing and the invisibility of older women.
