"Of things past and lost - Odhams Journey" - 6 - Blue and Silver
Hand stitched, full reuse of all materials, found and vintage papers, cotton thread and the collage backing an old supermarket sales poster with natural dyes, ink and paint . Using a fabulous discarded 'Oldhams' dictionary from the mid 1950s. 248 Circles of 'small stories' of beautiful vintage text, images and hand written notes, layered and hand stitched.
A painting major during university, however with collage I enjoy a more intimate and personal process with the recycled and vintage papers and at times encompassing textiles and needlework.
Collage especially allows this reworking and pastiche to make a new story or 'Paint' a new picture,
I enjoy the process and opportunities collage allows and embrace using recycled vintage and discarded papers, magazines and books - the ephemeral and the discarded. That which is fleeting/passing and impermanent to give new life and form - a new story.
One of two works in this series . Which are sold individually but hang beautifully together.

Framed and ready to hang. Black minimal rame, with perspex.
All artwork taken without perspex to minimise reflection - artworks subsequently look even better and pop under the perspex!

Karen Coull  (born Sydney 1961)

BA Visual Arts UWS 1992

A recipient of a City of Sydney Work/Live Studio Residency, Karen has exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia, UK, USA and Europe over the past 30 years.

She is represented in a number of public Australian, UK and USA collections and private collections in Australia,  Europe, USA and UK.

Coull is passionate about the often marginalised, domestic/traditionally female art practices with a strong emphasis on analogue collage using vintage and recycled paper. Her current focus is on her journey of ageing and the invisibility of older women.
