'Swan Lake’ speaks of unspoken hope and possibility.
From the base image of a vintage ballerina on point, hand embroidered with cotton thread 'rosebuds' and illuminated with recycled and vintage paper.
Mixed Media and hand embroidered collage allows a reworking and pastiche to make a new story or 'paint' a new picture. I use the process and opportunities that collage allows and embrace using and recycling vintage papers and magazines - often vintage French fashion magazines and discarded books from the 1950's and 1960's - the ephemeral and the discarded. That which is fleeting or passing and impermanent and giving new life and form - a new story.
My smaller collage studies are often the first steps and stepping off points for larger works and new series. I am a painter by degree and really love the process of painting, however, I love working with vintage and discarded paper. I adore the unlimited possibilities of using paper, mixed media, ink, paints, hand embroidery and the process of analogue collage, showcasing the historical marks of time with vintage, discarded and recycled papers.
Perfect for the budding ballerina in your life.
