ABOUT THIS PIECE
Inspired by the Celtic Goddess of Love, Aine.
MYTHOLOGY BEHIND THE ART
Aine was the beloved Irish Queen of the Fairies. In the myth she gave birth to an entire race of fairies whom she protected and guarded the realms in which they lived.
The Goddess’ sacred animal was the swan. She wore a cloak made of swan feathers and could shape-shift into a white swan. Goddess Aine ruled over the element of water and it’s miraculous healing properties.
SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATION
Lake - subconscious
Mountains - constancy, stillness, eternity
Feathers - metamorphosis and transmutation
Fairy - a deep connection between living beings and nature
Red Rose - Love
Gesture - caress, love, wisdom
Braid - Hidden in plain sight, the Ouroboros.
Ouroboros - Ancient symbol of unbroken circle of energy representing all of creation and its endless return. An eternal cycle of destruction and re-creation. Expresses the unity of all things.
TECHNICAL CONSTRUCTION
The painting was undertaken in the traditional technique of indirect painting; beginning with an initial monochromatic layer focussing on value, followed by a layer of colour and completed with a final pass to refine and unify the painting. Purposeful brush strokes were used to add a sense of direction, texture and dimension. Once dry, this piece was varnished for longevity and protection.
