ABOUT THIS PIECE
Inspired by the powerful effect of myth and archetype on our psyche I created this series to delight, provoke and inspire.
Athena is the second goddess in my Goddess Archetype Series.
This piece, a contemporary depiction of the Ancient Greek mythological Goddess Athena explores a present-day take on commercialism, business, power, wealth, strategy, beauty and wisdom.
MYTHOLOGY BEHIND THE ART
Athena, daughter of Zeus, was the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Crafts.
The Olympian goddess is known as being her father’s right-hand in regards to battle, strategic planning and wisdom. She was the protector of cities and patron of military forces. In times of peace she was the goddess of weavers, goldsmiths and dressmakers. Athena gave Perseus the key to defeat Medusa.
POSITIVE INFLUENCES OF THE ATHENA ARCHETYPE
Typically someone who has a dominant Athena archetype playing out will present as a realist, hardworking and adaptable. Preferring to spend their productive years in the world of power and achievement. They will often excel in the domestic arts using an aesthetic eye and a practical mind to manage an efficient household and or career. Organisation comes naturally and they excel in diplomacy. They have an ability to keep cool in emotional situations. They are often high-achievers with solid self-esteem.

Gold coin - commercialism, wealth and power
Medusa head - wisdom, self-reflection, strategic planning, victory and power
Gold spinning wheel and dress - valuing of masterful craftsmanship, domestic arts and peaceful times
City - business and place where the spirit of Athena is found
Owl - wisdom
Gesture - focus, observation, intelligence, interaction, composure in business, self-assured confidence.
TECHNICAL CONSTRUCTION
Whilst the majority of this painting was purposely completed in one loose layer to depict the ethereal nature of the goddess, her face was fully rendered in multiple layers giving a focal point of contrast representative of the dualities between the conscious and the subconscious, the goddess and the human, myth and reality. This painting is predominantly monochromatic apart from the gold components which are comprised of many colours to create a gold representation.
