‘Resilience II’ is a whimsical piece that depicts the haze that is our current climate where each animal represents different approaches to handling adversity and uncertainty.
I envisage this artwork to be a perfect conversational piece between parents and children or friend to friend.
As I was creating this piece I asked myself the following questions:
What does this animal represent in times of hardship?
What animal would I be during difficult times?
What animal would my family member/friend be in times of hardship?
What animal would I want to be?
I encourage you to consider these questions when looking at 'Resilience II’
To create Resilience II I spent time researching and studying native Australian animals to try and encapsulate the characters in this piece.
I aimed to create as much character within Philip the koala from the front as he exudes from the back in Resilience II.
This piece has a greater tonal contrast between light and dark as well as a paired back feel compared to Resilience I. The artworks are to be viewed as a pair and not in competition with each other.
The addition of the magpie in this piece is an ode to a friendly family of magpies that visit our house every day. The magpie in Resilience II was based of photos I took of the oldest grey magpie that visits who has greyed in age.
The pair of bats is something that is quintessentially South Australian and is a nod to the fruit bats that have taken up residence in the Adelaide botanical Gardens.
There is something very symbolic about butterflies and their metamorphosis which is why I wanted to include them again in this piece.
