Artwork Description

Wollongong Harbour is idyllically pretty and is still a working harbour for local fishers. The harbour is situated just below the escarpment so has a beautiful backdrop of Mt Kembla and Mt Kiera. I grew up in Wollongong and love the deep blue water and yellow sand of the coast there. The colours of the East coast beaches are very different from what I also know and love over here in the West in Perth where I now live. The different colour palette transports me from one place to another.

Artist Bio

Kate Ryan is a West Australian oil painter. Kate is particularly interested in the play of light, shadow and colour temperature . “ There is a particular intensity of light and colour that is unique to Western Australia that provides us with endless, magical and fleeting moments of beauty in nature. I try to catch the essence of these transient moments in my paintings. “
Kate’s current focus is on coastal images, wild flowers and still-life. She enjoys the challenge of painting en plein air (outdoors) and from life but also enjoys time in her Floreat studio.
Kate has also had significant success with portraiture and has been a semi-finalist in the prestigious Black Swan (now, Lester Portrait Prize) competition. Her work is now in collections in the UK, USA, New Zealand and around Australia.
